How does Solar PV work?

A solar cell is most commonly a silicon based semi-conductor junction which when subject to the photons in sunlight the generates movement of electrons which is current. This energy is collected as DC current and converted through an Inverter to AC current suitable for use in your house or fed back to the National Grid.

Do I need Planning permission?

Under most circumstances, the PV array can be installed under the amendments made in the General Permitted Development Order (GPDO), or the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Domestic Microgeneration) (Scotland) Amendment Order 2009. Permission is not normally required < 50 kWp.

The UK commercial rooftop industry received another boost this morning after Eric Pickles increased the permitted development threshold for rooftop solar panels installed on commercial property to 1MW. While no official confirmation has yet been made, the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed that a formal announcement is to be made later.

How reliable is a PV System?

PV systems are extremely reliable. PV Modules come with a 25 year warranty and have no moving parts so failures are rare. The inverters for solar PV systems have a 5 year warranty as standard.

How long does it take to fit them?

It is actually taking our teams 2 weeks, with time to erect and take down the scaffolding (when the homeowner does not have to be present). Our electrician will need access to your loft space in order to fit a voltage inverter and one of our specialist meters. It is not a disruptive process at all. It is quite straightforward. Obviously, if the weather is very bad this timescale may not be met.

Will my electricity supply be disrupted?

For around 20 minutes to allow our Electrician to complete the installation.

What will happen when I sell the property?

The new Owner will simply continue to benefit from the panels, a new agreement will NOT have to be signed. The FiTs payments are transferrable and add value to your property.

What is the life expectancy of a Solar PV system?

All PV systems supplied by 25 year guarantee and inverters generally have a 5 year guarantee. However, all system components should last considerably longer.

What maintenance and cleaning do the systems need?

PV Solar systems are silent in operation, have no moving parts and require very little maintenance. Dust or dirt may cause a power reduction. The modules can be cleaned with a hose and clean.

What happens if something goes wrong?

All panels come with a 25 year performance warranty so in the unlikely event that you experience problems, Powersun will be on hand to diagnose and resolve your problem. The installation comes with a 5 year workmanship warranty so you can be sure your installation will be of the highest standard.

Will I benefit the environment?

You will reduce you carbon footprint and reduce carbon emissions. The government pay FITs incentives to encourage you to change from existing fossil fuels to cleaner and more sustainable energy.
